Albert Sidney Johnston

Born: February 2, 1803 in Washington, Kentucky

Died: April 6, 1862 in Hardin County, Tennessee

  • Attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1826.
  • He fought in the Black Hawk War, the Texas War of Independence, and the Mexican-American War.
  • He was shot in the back of the knee during the Battle of Shiloh. He had not realized how serious his wound was and continued to lead his troops into battle until he collapsed on his horse, was removed from the field, and bled to death.
  • His death was the highest-ranking casualty of the Civil War on either side.
  • At the time of his death, he was considered by Confederate President Jefferson Davis to be the best general in the country, having died before the emergence of Robert E. Lee.
