George Custer

(George Armstrong Custer)

Born: December 5, 1839 in New Rumley, Ohio

Died: June 25, 1876 in Little Bighorn, Montana

Military Rank (USA): Brevet Major General

  • He attended the U.S. Military Academy, graduating in 1862.
  • He often led his troops into battle, whereas many other commanders tried to avoid being in harm’s way.
  • He became one of the youngest generals in the Union Army when he was promoted at the age of 23, just three days prior to the Battle of Gettysburg.
  • He is known for his fearless and reckless battle style, often leading “Custer Dashes” and relying on luck to surprise the enemy and take advantage. Despite this style, he diligently scouted out an area and gauged enemy forces before planning an attack.
  • He fought in the Indian Wars, and this is when “Custer’s Last Stand” happened. He led his troops in the Battle of Little Bighorn, but underestimated the number of Indian warriors. Every U.S. soldier was killed in this battle.
