  • He served as commander of the New Corps during the Battle of Gettysburg.
  • He supervised the execution of the conspirators in the Lincoln assassination.
  • He ran as the Democratic nominee against Republican James Garfield in the presidential election of 1880.
  • He died of an infected carbuncle (boil, abcess) complicated by diabetes.
