- He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1850 at the age of 19.
- He attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1854.
- He was wounded at the Battle of Fair Oaks, and had his right arm amputated. He later received a Medal of Honor for his heroism in 1893.
- He recovered quickly and rejoined the army for the Battle of Antietam.
- He suffered defeats at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.
- He founded Howard University, a university open to both men and women of any race.
