James Longstreet

  • He attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1842.
  • At U.S.M.A., he met and befriended Ulysses S. Grant.
  • He fought in the Mexican-American War.
  • He became known for his defensive strategies and tactics.
  • He is often blamed for the Confederate defeat at the Battle of Gettysburg for allowing Pickett’s Charge to happen.
  • He was wounded in the Battle of the Wilderness.
  • He served as the U.S. Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire during Grant’s Presidency.
  • He died of pneumonia.
