- He attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1841.
- He fought in the Mexican-American War.
- He was captured at Boatswain’s Swamp after the Battle of Gaines’ Mill on June 27, 1862 but was exchanged on August 15 for Lloyd Tilghman.
- He was shot in the head and killed during the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg.
