Died: March 11, 1898 in Redondo Beach, California

Military Rank (USA): Major General

  • He attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1842.
  • He served engineering assignments during the Mexican-American War.
  • He had his first big victory at the Battle of Rich Mountain.
  • He often bypassed the chain of command, which worked in his favor at the Battle of Stones River but was his undoing at the Battle of Chickamauga.
  • He died of pneumonia.
