- He attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1842.
- He served engineering assignments during the Mexican-American War.
- He had his first big victory at the Battle of Rich Mountain.
- He often bypassed the chain of command, which worked in his favor at the Battle of Stones River but was his undoing at the Battle of Chickamauga.
- He died of pneumonia.
